KuneKunes trace back to Pacific Island pigs that reached Aotearoa New Zealand through early trade with visiting sailors, then were nurtured by Māori communities who valued them as calm, free-roaming companions rather than penned livestock. By the 1970s the breed had nearly vanished, down to a handful of animals scattered across remote corners of the North Island. Two dedicated New Zealanders spent years tracking down the last purebred survivors, and the small herd they gathered became the foundation for every KuneKune alive today, including the ones grazing right here at Thompson Corral.

The fleshy little tassels that dangle beneath many KuneKune chins are called wattles, also known by their Māori name, piri piri. Not every KuneKune grows a pair. Some have one, some have none, and it has no effect on health or personality either way.

Ask anyone who's spent time around a KuneKune and "friendly" is usually the first word out of their mouth. The breed was shaped by generations of living alongside people rather than being fenced away from them, and that history shows: they're calm, sociable, and genuinely seem to enjoy company, whether that's a scratch behind the ears or a slow walk around the pasture. It's a big part of why they've become a favorite for families and small farms alike.

KuneKunes have a look all their own: a short, sturdy frame set low to the ground, a rounded belly, and a broad, slightly dished face. Their snout is shorter than most pig breeds, which pairs with grazing teeth built for pulling up grass rather than digging deep. Ears can stand up or flop forward, and no two pigs seem to wear them quite the same way.

Coat colors across the breed run from deep black to cream white, with ginger, gold, brown, and speckled combinations showing up along the way. Registries keep an official color chart just to keep track of it all, since new pairings can turn up patterns breeders haven't quite seen before. It's one of the small joys of raising them. Every litter is a bit of a surprise.

Unlike many pig breeds, KuneKunes are grazers first and diggers a distant second. They'll happily mow down a pasture the way a herd of little lawnmowers would, without leaving the churned-up craters other breeds are known for. That single trait is a big reason they've become a favorite for orchards, small acreages, and anyone who wants pigs without saying goodbye to their lawn.

Fully grown KuneKunes typically stand around two feet tall at the shoulder and settle somewhere between 100 and 250 pounds, though exact size depends a lot on bloodline and diet. They're also slow to mature, often taking a couple of years to reach full adult size rather than bulking up quickly the way commercial breeds do. That leisurely growth is part of what keeps them so easygoing.

Sows are typically given a year or so to mature before their first litter, even though they're biologically capable earlier, and pregnancies last right around 114 days, or about three months, three weeks, and three days. Litters can vary quite a bit in size, and piglets are usually ready to wean by six to eight weeks old. From there, it's a slow, steady runway to adulthood, very on-brand for this unhurried breed.

Every registered KuneKune traces back to a documented family tree, and responsible breeders lean on that history to avoid pairing pigs too closely related to one another. Between their manageable size, easygoing nature, and light footprint on pasture, KuneKunes have become a go-to choice for first-time pig owners and small family farms. A simple three-sided shelter with dry bedding and a secure fence line is usually all they need to thrive, which makes them a realistic option for homesteads that couldn't manage a larger, more destructive breed.

With good nutrition and routine care, KuneKunes commonly live into their teens, and well-kept pigs have been known to reach eighteen to twenty years old. Genetics, diet, and living conditions all play a role, but compared to many farm animals, a KuneKune is a long-term companion, closer to a family pet's lifespan than a typical livestock timeline.
